A Lawa‘i man died in a car accident in ‘Oma‘o yesterday morning when his vehicle was hit by oncoming traffic, according to county officials. The death marks the fourth traffic fatality of the year on-island.
The accident occurred at about 10 a.m. on Kaumuali‘i Highway just west of mile marker 8.
Clyde Shigematsu, 55, of Lawa‘i, was heading west in a Toyota sedan on Kaumuali‘i Highway when he was struck by an eastbound Toyota Tundra driven by Thomas Veatch, 57, of Kalaheo, according to a statement from the Kaua‘i Police Department.
Shigematsu was extricated from his vehicle and transported to Wilcox Memorial Hospital, where he was pronounced dead. Veatch and a passenger in the truck were not injured.
Shigematsu was the owner of C Shigematsu Construction in Kalaheo.
According to the statement, speed and alcohol do not appear to have been factors in the crash.
The accident resulted in the closure of Kaumuali‘i Highway near ‘Oma‘o Bridge for about two hours as police conducted an investigation, County Public Information Officer Mary Daubert said.
