KALAHEO — Teams from Kahuku, Maui and Nanakuli opened up the doors of the Kalaheo Neighborhood Center, Thursday night.
The basketball teams are part of the annual goodwill basketball tournament hosted by the Rotary Club of West Kaua‘i and the ZZ Basketball program.
Coordinator Jeff Venzon of the ZZ program was busy trying to get teams settled in at the Kalaheo center which overflowed with people as six games highlighted the opening night action.
According to Venzon, Friday night games moved to the Clem Gomes Gym in Waimea with the tournament wrapping up today at the Kalaheo Neighborhood Center starting at 8 a.m.
Teams involved in this year’s tournament include a Kahuku 12 and Under boys team, a 14 and Under girls team and a Boys 14 and Under team challenging Kaua‘i teams.
Maui and Nanakuli each field a Boys 14 and Under team.
In the opening game Thursday, Kahuku 12U was a 47-1 winner over Hanakila, a Kilauea team. Kawe, no last names listed on scoring roster, Fia and Zack paced the Kahuku victory with Kawe netting a dozen points followed by Fia and Zack finishing with 8 points each.
Justin Apilado chalked up Hanakila’s point.
Keane Agoot exploded for 27 points, Duke Pauli added 16 points, and Ka‘awa Solomon finished with 10 points to lead Team Central to a 67-7 victory over the Gee Unit who got pairs from Shane Deponte and Donovan Harrison.
Aiko Grande, coming back to the courts from the Kaua‘i Interscholastic Federation varsity arena, paced Kaulupono with 8 points followed by Lorrine Lagoc adding 6 points in the Westside girls’ 25-23 edge over Kahuku.
Jessica (no last name posted) paced Kahuku with a game-high 19 points followed by Rachel and Keuhi each netting a pair.
Scott Sasan’s dad was the rotating scoreboard, holding the board high above his head to give the capacity crowd a view of the standing as Laukona came from a 20-20 half-time stalemate to edge Kahuku 38-35 in overtime.
Kekoa Colipano led the way for Laukona with a dozen points followed by Kahale Fagarang finishing with 9 points. Paleku Yasay added 5 points with Dalton Thronas and Scott Sasan each finishing with 3 points.
Kahuku got a dozen marks from Galeo (no last name posted), with Kawe and Kawika adding 8 and 7 points, respectively.
No scores were available for the Team Central/Maui or the Gee’s Unit/Nanakuli match-ups.
