The Kaua‘i Society of Artists will host a special presentation with Marcia Morse, professor of art at Honolulu Community College, art critic, and freelance curator tonight at 6:30 p.m. at Kukui Grove Exhibition Hall (Unit B-6), in Lihu‘e. A potluck precedes the talk at 6 p.m.
“Ms. Morse will discuss the dynamics of critiques and juried shows from the perspective of both artist and juror. As a kind of case study, she will also discuss a project she is currently working on, including proofs and drawings showing the process of how she develops ideas and images,” states a recent press release.
Morse was raised in Hawai‘i before leaving for further education on the Mainland. After completing her undergraduate work at Harvard University, she spent two-and-a-half years living in Quito, Ecuador, where she began her study of printmaking. She completed graduate work in Printmaking at Stanford University before returning to Hawai‘i. She has worked at Honolulu Community College since 1984, where she is tenured as a Professor of Art.
In addition to her work as an educator, Morse is active as art critic, freelance curator, and artist. She served for 11 years as the critic for the Honolulu Star Bulletin and continues to write on a freelance basis for Honolulu Weekly and for Mainland and international publications, including Artweek and Art in America. She has written catalogue essays for several prominent island artists including Satoru Abe, Tadashi Sato, Claude Horan, Charles Higa, and Kaili Chun.
Morse has participated in numerous solo, small group, juried and invitational exhibitions since 1965. She is represented in several private and corporate collections in the U.S., Japan and Europe, and is the recipient of several purchase awards from the Hawai‘i State Foundation on Culture and the Arts. She is also the recipient of a major individual fellowship from the National Endowment for the Arts for her work in hand-papermaking. Her recent work has included installations at The Contemporary Museum/First Hawaiian Center, and the Honolulu Academy of Arts, and an exhibition of small mixed-media sculpture at The Gallery at Ward Centre in Honolulu. She is currently developing a new series of prints that will be included in a two-person show (with ceramic sculptor Margaret Realica) at the Nu‘uanu Gallery in October 2007.
This event is sponsored by the Kauai Society of Artists with support in part from the Hawai‘i State Foundation on Culture and the Arts, with space courtesy of Kukui Grove Shopping Center.
