A California woman was seriously injured when the vehicle she was riding in was hit head-on after her husband attempted a turn on a busy section of Kuhio Highway late Friday.
Kiyoko Espiritu, 70, was airlifted to Queens Medical Center on O‘ahu after being treated at Wilcox Memorial Hospital.
She remains in critical condition at Queens.
Kiyoko was with her husband, Antonio Espiritu, 75, when he attempted to make a left turn onto South Papaloa Road from Kuhi‘o Highway in a Toyota sedan at around 8 p.m. and was struck by a northbound Toyota pick-up driven by Durgh Kane Jr., 28, of Lihu‘e.
All three victims were transported to Wilcox Memorial Hospital. Antonio Espiritu was treated for minor injuries and released. Kane was treated and released.
Police state, in a press release, that speed appears to be a contributing factor in the crash.
In other news, a Thursday fire on the North Shore destroyed an outbuilding before it was contained by arriving firefighters. The 145-square-foot shed located at 5-6577 Kuhi‘o Highway in Wainiha was completely destroyed.
No one was injured in the blaze and no other structures were threatened.
Damage to the structure and contents is estimated at $5,000.
Four firefighters from the Hanalei station responded to the blaze that was quickly brought under control.
The cause of the fire is under investigation.
