KAPA‘A — Brandon Taylor’s towering figure added the extra measure for the Devils in a 7-6 win over Wap’paa Sunday in Kapa‘a.
The Devils worked quickly to build up a 3-1 halftime lead, but Wap’paa tied the contest in the final 34 seconds on Chris Villabrille’s third goal of the Bantam division game.
But the Devils did not roll over. In fact, they answered in less than 15 seconds when Brandon scored with 20 seconds left for the 7-6 win.
“It must’ve been the lightning Friday night,” said Penni Taketa, the association’s scorekeeper. “Friday night’s Bantam game was really exciting, too. The kids must’ve gotten worked up with all that lightning flashing.”
Brandon topped the day’s scoring with five goals and an assist for the Devils. Mathias Davis and Cydney Sitzler each netted a goal and Austin Taylor and Matthew Heller added an assist apiece.
Greg Balmores, the Devils’ goalkeeper, finished the contest with 16 saves on 22 shots.
For Wap’paa, Trevor McCracken had a goal and two assists, Zack Rodrigues netted a goal and an assist, and Grant Basquez and Kawai‘iki Punua round out the scoring.
Wap’paa goalie Jean-Luc Tremblay saved 40 of 47 shots facing an assertive, relentless Devil attack.
The Sunday contest redeemed the Devils’ 6-4 loss to the Green team Friday night.
In that contest, sisters Sierra and Cascade Mayer teamed up to lead the Green scoring with three goals each. Brother-sister team Trevor and Kirsten McCracken finished with two goals each, along with Sutton Keenen. Kaysie Ota added a second-half goal for the winning math.
Jacob Lewis led the Devils on Friday night with three goals, followed by Sitzler’s two scores. Kawai Peahu and Brandon Taylor also scored in the game.
In other Sunday contests, Shannon Sitzler netted two goals to lead the Wave Riders to a 3-2 win over the Fireballs, who got two scores from Nina Anthony in the Mites contest.
Wave Rider goalie Jed Ragudo was 7 of 9 in save attempts while Marissa Aceret, tending for the Fireballs, stopped 10 of 13 shots.
Gavin Bryan and Troy Spears each netted three scores to lead the Dragons to a 9-1 win over the Sharks in the Squirt contest Sunday.
The duo was joined by Robin Bihm adding two goals and Prisma Verzosa netting a score in the win.
Chanel Tremblay and Aceret led the Sharks effort with a goal and an assist, respectively.
Mikali Crowder, the Dragons’ keeper, only faced 5 shots, saving four, with Shark tender Makana Crowder saved 16 of 25.
In Friday night’s Mite contest, Shannon Sitzler netted a hat trick in the Wave Riders’ 3-0 win over the Fireballs under the threat of rain.
Aceret, tending for the Wave Riders, let 1 of 3 shots get by Makani Crowder, goalkeeper for the Fireballs, stopped 14 of 17.
Rain and lightning rained out the Squirt contest in the second half, but not before Troy Spears, Gavin Bryan and Prisma Verzosa got off scores for a 3-0 Dragon edge.
