KPAA‘A — Kekoa Colipano played with the intensity of not wanting to share the title.
The Kapa‘a JV big-man-underneath tucked in 13 of his game-high 19 points in the second half, but the JV Warriors could not pull closer than the 9-point spread 59-50 at the buzzer.
With the win, Kaua‘i and Kapa‘a JV boys teams share the title for that division by virtue of each team winning two games against each other.
The Junior Raiders went to work early as its defense kept Kapa‘a outside early. But, sparked by a three-point bomb from Thomas Gausepohl and buckets from Cody Abigania and Kaleo Cummings, Kapa‘a kept close 10-7 in the opening frame.
Kaua‘i answered back in the second stanza as Trey Shimabukuro notched a trey of his own to cap a 20-10 Raider quarter and a 30-17 halftime lead.
Austin Simao sparked that frame for Kaua‘i with 7 points while Shimabukuro and Teila Huni netted 5 and 4 points, respectively.
Following a defensive matchup in the third quarter, Kapa‘a surged to a 23-18 final quarter, but the effort came in too late to trim the lead.
Huni and Simao topped the Raider scoring with 16 and 13 points, respectively. Scott Taylor, getting hammered in the lane, finished with 8 points followed by Cameron Largusa netting 7 points. Shimbukuro’s five second-quarter points, four from Nick Chow and Lester Alacar, and a pair from Scot Sasan rounded out the Raider scoring.
Following Colipano, Kapa‘a got a dozen points from Gausepohl who added his ball-handling skills to the Warrior game. Cummings finished with 7 points before fouling out at the 4-minute mark and Abigania finished with 6 points.
Jason Iloreta added four points and a pair from Davin Chong who also contributed heavily in securing defensive rebounds in the second half accounted for the Kapa‘a math.
