The sixth annual Irons Brothers Pine Trees Classic Surf Contest is coming to Hanalei Saturday.
Once again, Andy and Bruce Irons are giving back to the community that nurtured them by putting on the contest for kids 6 to 12 years old.
There will be a 6- to 8-year-old “push-in” division (an adult can help the mini surfer in the water) Boys & Girls 9 to 10 and Junior Boys & Girls 11 to 12.
The start time is 8 a.m., and entry into the event is free.
The contest is a highly anticipated event for competitors and fans alike. The Irons brothers will sign autographs and hang out with the kids. Free food from Tim Kerlin and Hanalei Gourmet and free shave ice handed out by the Tamba crew will also be available.
All the groms can have their picture taken at a photo booth provided by Nixon, a watch-maker that sponsors Bruce.
Contest organizers Phil and Danielle Irons are working hard stuffing backpacks full of tons of goodies from the Irons brothers’ sponsors for each participant. Contestants will also receive a hat and T-shirt, and the top six finishers in all the divisions will get a much-coveted trophy.
Everyone helps with what has become a Hanalei tradition, including Lyndie and Mia, Andy and Bruce’s girlfriends, who gathered donations from local businesses to help stuff the backpacks.
In addition, Bruce and Andy will personally give away round-trip airline tickets to help selected kids get to the State Championships and the NSSA Nationals in California. The Irons brothers will also give away surfboards to a few kids that they pick out during the day from the crowd of groms. Special awards will also go to the best sportsman and best attitude.
For five years running, the contest has been one of the more popular surf events on the island. The community shows up in droves and tiny surfers get to show their stuff to their ‘ohana and their heroes.
Spots are limited to the first 124 entries received and no beach entries will be accepted.
Entries must be received by mail Friday. Send entries: H.S.F Kauai/Box 1194/Waimea, HI 96796.
For more information, call 338-1952.
The contest is not open to top six amateur surfers from H.S.F or N.S.S.A.
