If you are near the airport today between the hours of 8:30 a.m. and 10:30 a.m. the official-looking personnel near Hawaiian Airlines baggage claim area B are not responding to a real event. They are first responders participating in a drill.
Kaua‘i Civil Defense officials are holding an emergency services exercise at the Lihu‘e Airport this morning.
The exercise will provide the opportunity for airport officials and first responders to review, practice and evaluate the airport’s emergency plan and emergency services.
During the exercise, the entire Hawaiian Airlines baggage claim area B will be closed, including the bus parking and adjacent sidewalks.
The entire north end of the terminal, including the passenger departure holding areas, will be closed as well.
Arriving Hawaiian Airlines passengers will temporarily utilize the Aloha Airlines — or south — side of the terminal.
Additionally, the center and far right lanes of the roadway fronting the airport terminal will be closed during the drill. Only the far left lane will be open.
Once the exercise is complete, emergency personnel will evaluate their performance and determine what area of emergency response needs improvement.
