Nonprofits are increasingly adapting for-profit business techniques — such as business plans — to achieve their social and financial bottom lines. “Business Planning for Nonprofits,” a three-hour workshop sponsored by the Hawai‘i Alliance of Nonprofit Organizations, will highlight the critical elements and best practices in business planning, according to a recent press release.
It will also help nonprofits decide when to initiate a plan on their own and when to turn to an expert. Anyone can attend. The workshop is especially relevant for nonprofit executive directors and managers.
Deadline to sign up is Thursday.
The workshop will begin at 9:30 a.m., Feb. 8, at the Kauai Humane Society at 3-825 Kaumuali‘i Highway, Lihu‘e. Registration opens at 9:15 a.m. Cost of the workshop is $60 for HANO members and United Way partner agencies and $90 for non-members. Workshop materials and light refreshments are included in the registration fee.
Topics will include:
• When a business plan is needed and why.
• The primary components of a business plan, financial projection basics, business risks and the frame of mind needed for business planning.
• What to prepare before you seek assistance.
The presenter is James Koshiba, co-founder of 3Point, a mission-driven, independent, public interest research and consulting firm. Koshiba has expertise in nonprofit management and financial planning, community economic development and community-development finance.
