Rock ‘n’ roll hall of famer Gregg Allman wraps up a nationwide tour in St. Louis, Mo., this Sunday, and then will hop on a plane to come straight to Kaua‘i to kick off another one.
The Gregg Allman & Friends, Hawai‘i tour, begins Wednesday at the Kaua‘i War Memorial Convention Hall. The doors open at 6 p.m., the show starts at 7 p.m.
“It’s kind of like a working vacation for him and the guys,” said Mardi Gras Entertainment promoter Kevin Rogers, who is producing the Kaua‘i show.
Allman is both a founding member of one of the biggest American bands of all time, the Allman Brothers Band, and is a critically acclaimed solo talent.
“This is a world-class type of act and a step up in the caliber of acts we’ve had within the last five years,” Rogers said. “It’s not a comeback act. This is a guy whose band has been going on all these years.”
At the start of his enduring career, Allman and his brother Duane put together a number of different groups, including their very first professional ones, The Allman Joys, and The Hour Glass.
In 1969, their brotherhood made history with the formation of the massively influential act that both kick-started the entire genre of Southern Rock and defined an era of ’70s rock and roll with its freewheeling yet musically masterful sound, The Allman Brothers Band. Duane Allman died in October 1971, after a motorcycle accident with a peach truck. Gregg was eventually able to carry on with the Allman musical legacy.
“This is a once in a lifetime opportunity to see an act like this,” said Rogers. “Especially for this particular island. O‘ahu and Maui get big acts all the time, but it’s a rare opportunity for us. You can see this guy for the price of a dinner at a nice restaurant and this memory will last longer — a lot longer than the meal.”
Tickets are available at the Hanalei Music & Video, Bounty Music in Kapa‘a, Kaua‘i Harley Davidson in Puhi, Progessive Expressions in Koloa, Scotty’s Music in Kalaheo and the Kilauea Pharmacy in Kilauea. Tickets also can be charged by phone at 545-2980.
