hires new Hawai‘i head
• Morris Visitor Publications announced Nina LaMonte as the new group publisher, who will oversee all publications for the Hawai‘i region, including the upscale visitor guidebook “Guest Informant” and magazines Quick Guide, Dining in Paradise, Living in Paradise, Wailea, Shops at Wailea and Honolulu Nightlife.
LaMonte, who has more than 15 years of media experience in marketing and advertising, previously served as vice president of Advertising Associates International, LLC.

• Mark G. Valencia and Esther S. Han have become directors and shareholders at the O‘ahu law firm Case Lombardi & Pettit.
Valencia concentrates his practice in the areas of civil litigation, with an emphasis in complex litigation matters.
He has successfully handled a number of complex litigation cases, including contract, insurance, tort, products liability, foreclosure, bankruptcy, land use, appellate, and employment law matters.
An American Council on Exercise Certified Personal Trainer, Valencia also specializes in the health and fitness industry focusing on the legal issues affecting personal trainers, health and fitness organizations, and health and nutrition stores.
Han practices in the areas of real estate acquisition, financing and development, including hotel and residential condominium structuring, registration, sales and management and zoning and entitlements.
Han also has significant experience in general corporate business transactions and finance and restructurings.
Seniors have new resource to help successful aging
• Larry Tanimoto successfully completed all studies and has passed the examination required for certification by the Society of Certified Senior Advisors.
The CSA of Guild Mortgage Company, Tanimoto feels the health, financial and social needs of seniors are different and more complicated then those of any other age group.
He is the first and only person on Kaua‘i to hold the Certified Senior Advisor designation, according to a Guild Mortgage release.
Tanimoto can now assist any senior 62 years and older that are interested in reverse mortgages.
Tanimoto has been doing mortgages since 1973 and holds a bachelor’s degree in finance and economics.
SCSA is an international organization that has trained more than 20,000 professionals to meet the challenging needs of a growing senior population.
A&B names HR vice president
• Son-Jai Paik has been named vice president of human resources for Alexander & Baldwin, reporting to chairman and CEO Allen Doane.
Paik will be responsible for all human resources functions for A&B and its subsidiaries, including employee development and training, benefits, and compensation.
Paik began his career in human resources in 1998 in CIGNA Corporation’s Human Resource Development Program, a rotation-based program aimed at developing future HR leaders.
In 2000, he joined Cigna International Expatriate Benefits and held a series of positions with increasing responsibility within CIEB before being appointed, in 2003, vice president of human resources for LINA Korea, CIGNA International’s largest operation in the Asia Pacific region and the second largest contributor of divisional revenues and earnings worldwide.
At LINA Korea, Paik was a strategic partner with business unit executives and oversaw all human resources functions including search and staffing, leadership planning and development, compensation and benefits, employee relations and general HR services.
“Son-Jai comes to A&B with a strong business perspective and will help us to ensure we have the proper people resources in place — and keep them in place — to achieve our strategic objectives,” Doane said in a release.
Paik earned master’s degrees from Cornell University’s School of Hotel Administration and the School of Industrial and Labor Relations. His bachelor’s degree in economics was earned at Syracuse University.
Apollo Kauai to talk about hydopower
• This month’s Apollo Kauai meeting will focus on hydropower opportunities. The low-maintenance, long-lived, economical source of clean renewable energy has significant potential for Kaua‘i, state an Apollo Kauai release.
Jeff Deren of the Kaua‘i Island Utility Cooperative will start the discussion with a brief review of some of the hydropower projects KIUC has studied of late.
Following that, John Wehrheim of Pacific Hydro — who has designed and implemented a number of projects in Hawai‘i and is familiar with the potential for clean, renewable energy from water on the islands — will speak.
The meeting starts at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday at St. Michael and All Angels Episcopal Church in Lihu‘e.
