This year’s instrumental ensemble concerts will be special ones.
The Jazz Band and Wind Symphony concert tomorrow at the Kaua‘i Community College at 7 p.m., features swing music and show tunes, and a performance of “A Winter’s Eve.”
“A Winter’s Eve” was written by Kilauea resident Loren Kayfetz. The performance march by the KCC Wind Symphony marks the first time the piece has been played in more than 30 years.
“I have not had the opportunity to play it since I wasn’t around or in a band to perform it,” said Kayfetz.
Kayfetz wrote the music back when he attended a community college in Michigan.
“The music was sitting on an envelope in a corner, collecting dust,” said Kayfetz. “I presented the music to band director Larry McIntosh back in October, the band played it and he said ‘We’ll play this for the concert.’ I was floored.”
Kayfetz is nervous about how it will be received.
“Composing is a personal form of expression, but it’s something I want to start doing again,” he said. “This is a test for me.”
The Jazz Ensemble will start off swinging with “Big Swing Face,” by Bill Potts. They will go on to perform “Fiesta Bahia” by Victor Lopes.
The orchestra concert will be this Thursday, also at 7 p.m. at the KCC PAC.
They will perform alongside eight guest musicians from the American Philharmonic of Sonoma County. Ali‘i Strings will perform the pre-concert music in the KCC PAC lobby.
The expanded orchestra of 36 musicians will perform “Dance of the Tumblers” from the “Snow Maiden” by Nikoloai Rimsky Korsakov and “Canon and Gigue” by Johann Pachebel.
This concert is presented in collaboration with the Kaua‘i Concert Association, who will provide the post-concert reception in honor of the musicians. It’s $10 to attend the reception, which includes heavy pupus, dessert, wine and other beverages.
