PO‘IPU — Traffic in the big tent ebbed and surged with the weather.
But when people travel from afar to catch some of the action at the PGA Grand Slam of Golf, they need souvenirs to take back with them.
Enter the merchandise tent.
Not only do the event items make good souvenirs, they also make good gifts in time for holiday giving.
Ivy Santos, one of the longtime employees at the Po‘ipu Bay Golf Course Pro Shop, said they have a wide range of collectibles for the 24th Grand Slam of Golf that opened yesterday with both the Champions Clinic and the Pro Am event featuring players from across the state and the Mainland being given an opportunity to play with one of the four competing PGA golfers — Tiger Woods, Geoff Ogilvy, Mike Weir and Jim Furyk.
Santos said the ball markers featuring the Po‘ipu designs appear to be one of the better sellers.
“We have the widest variety of merchandise selected with the Grand Slam logo,” said Mac McAtee, merchandise manager for the Po‘ipu pro shop. McAtee credits the selection process for the merchandise and his crew for the brisk business done by the merchandise tent for the past 13 years the Grand Slam has been held in Po‘ipu.
“This is an extremely good business,” McAtee said.
Santos said in addition to the collectibles, they have a wide range of fashion and other gifts bearing the Grand Slam logo.
“We have a new tent this year, too,” Santos said.
Shoppers have access to the merchandise tent as they come through the main entrance. There they can browse leisurely, make selections, and have their purchases held for pickup as they leave the golf course.
McAtee said all of the logo merchandise is available at the pro shop throughout the year.
