The Kauai Pow Wow Council would like to thank all the volunteers that supported the 8th Annual Pow Wow. Despite the rain and an earthquake, it was the largest turnout ever. The silent auction featured 173 donated items, helping raise funds for education projects. The County Office of Economic Development, Wal-Mart, Young Brothers Foundation, KIUC and the Kapa’a Rotary gave grants as well.
As the saying goes, “It takes a village to raise a child.”
“We can also say it takes a strong community to make cultural and educational programs happen,” the council said.
The council would also like to send a big mahalo to the Ali‘i Motorcycle Group for providing the muscle, man power and know-how for set-up and take-down, and for round-the-clock security. Special thanks go out to Uncle Nathan Kalama for blessing the Pow Wow Grounds in an opening ceremony.
The Indian Fry Bread Booth was operated by Mary Ann Holden and volunteers Lisa Jobson, Steven Ching, the Agustin family, Marion Meckelburg, Mariah Farley, Chandra, Tracy, Amy, Marilyn Hunt, Oli Bonham, Cat and Katrina Sherrow, Dennis Mendonca, Ken Joplin, Ann and Sarah Farolla, Francine, Lois Anderssen and “Fry Bread Queen” Renee Hicks with children Justin, Beau and Reesa pitching in.
Miss Indian World, Violet John attended with her father Melvin John, traveling from Northern Alberta, Canada. Mark Jeffers told stories in the Tee-Pee with children on Saturday. The Keiki Tent was manned by newcomers Lisa Henry-Hodell and Tek Nickerson, and the silent auction was run with the incredible efficiency of Tina Sakamoto, Dr. Kani Blackwell and Vivian Satow — big Mahalo nui loa to you for dedication. John Bettencourt manned the T-shirt and membership booth.
