HANAPEPE — The first play of the game last night between the undefeated Kaua‘i Red Raiders and the home team Waimea Menehune said it all.
Raiders quarterback Andrew Renaud dropped back, faked left to the flats, and threw downfield to his favorite receiver, Pono Matthews, for an 80-yard hookup for a touchdown, their first of two in the game.
In all Renaud threw four passing touchdowns on the night in a precision air attack aimed at spreading the field and taking the wind out of the Waimea defense. Two rushing touchdowns and two field goals rounded out the scoring in a 41-0 blowout.
The majority of carries on the ground went to senior running back Brendan Young, who barreled off-tackle for several hard-fought yards and later caught a short shovel pass from Renaud that he parlayed into a 24-yard score early in the fourth quarter.
The most promising advance by the Menehune came early in the fourth quarter when they finally moved the ball past midfield and into Raider territory on two first-down passes by quarterback Kalen Fleming to wide receiver Alex Palacio.
But the Raider defense quickly squashed any hopes of a Menehune score with a vicious sack of the quarterback by Raider lineman Joey Banasihan. The Menehune turned the ball over on fourth down and conceded the inevitable.
