THE GARDEN ISLAND
A Kaua‘i police officer sustained minor injuries Wednesday after losing control of his patrol car and slamming into a utility pole on Kuhio Highway near Moloa‘a.
Officer Jerald Kim was treated at Wilcox Memorial Hospital emergency room and admitted for observation, officials said Friday.
The accident occurred at 2:40 p.m. Kim was traveling south on Kuhio Highway when he lost control of his vehicle and struck a utility pole. His car then crossed the highway and came to rest in some bushes, Capt. Ale Quibilan said.
“The utility pole was completely destroyed,” Quibilan said. “The police vehicle sustained major damages.”
There were no other vehicles involved, and no other damages reported. Police are investigating why Kim lost control of the vehicle.
Richard Pettey, a visitor who was returning from charter fishing, arrived just after the accident happened.
“Other motorists quickly responded and had the scene under control,” Pettey said.
He said at least four police cars and one ambulance responded to the scene.
