KAPA‘A — The defending champion KIF girls volleyball will open round two Wednesday night against the Waimea Menehune.
Kapa‘a, who is coming off a loss in five games on Sept. 23, will be hosting Waimea High School at the Bernice Hundley Gym when round two takes to the floor for the second round.
That loss has got to spark some energy in the hearts of the Warrior women who have gotten some good play from Brittney Carvalho, Joliann Arzadon and Poe Gantt.
But following a strong showing from Mai‘lika Napoleon early in the round, the Warriors’ depth shallowed as the specialty players were jockeyed around the floor to fill in the gaps. Additionally, Kapa‘a got some improved play from Leisha Moniz towards the end of the round.
Waimea has been in control of both the boys and girls games with the first round title hanging on the walls of the Clem Gomes Gym.
Nani Dennis, a transfer from Kaua‘i High School, has been at the heart of the Menehune with her consistent setting and blocking. Anchoring the hitters is Nue Wong, stronger than ever after recovering from an injury that sidelined her last year. Additional depth comes from Chaslee Delanoza and Tialei Agader with Cheri Kua and Brytney Lanning blocking up the middle. Jamie Horikawa anchors the backrow along with Kristen Takashima.
Daniel Rodrick has been at the heart of the Kapa‘a boys, defending HHSAA Division II champions. Add a dash of Coty Salausa, who doubles as the Warriors QB on the football field, Chance Bukoski, one of their soccer standouts as well as top finishers in cross country, and the spice of John Beralas and Kunane Gayagas and the Warrior men are ready for round two.
Waimea, on the other hand, did not simply pick up round one honors as the Menehune were anchored by Chris Newcomb who also doubles as one of their key football players. Add the power hitting of Calsen Agrade, the consistent setting of Jared Matsumoto and the hustle of Keelan Sakuda and the mixture is ready to serve.
For the second round, the girls will take the floor starting at 5 p.m. followed by the boys game to start no earlier than 6:30 p.m.
