KAPA‘A — Col. Jerald Knudsen, a coach for the Kapa‘a High School air riflery team, was elated Thursday.
Battling through shifting winds blowing in off the Kealia shoreline, the Kapa‘a second relay came in to push the boys to a 12-point win over Waimea High School in team points. Kapa‘a boys finished with 1,107 team points.
“The students are improving,” Knudsen said. “The last time we came up seven points short, this time we made it over the top.”
The Kapa‘a wahine, however, were outscored by the visiting Menehune 1,128 to 1,053 points.
In Puhi, the undefeated Kaua‘i High School shooters swept their series against host Island School. The Red Raider boys earned 1,185 team points to Island School’s 994-point showing while the wahine Raider shooters piled up 1,159 team points to Island School’s 1,006 points.
This broke a two-week string of scores where the Kaua‘i girls outshot the boys in an unofficial internal competition.
Kapa‘a’s Max Vandervort came in on the second relay to lead the Warrior men with a 234 (91-79-64) showing followed by Rustam Klutke’s 231 (87-75-69). Other Warrior boys who counted in the scoring included Ian Ramos (84-74-61-219), Terrence Cuyo (79-76-62-217) and Travis Toguchi (73-69-64-206).
“We have the week off, so aside from some staff meetings, we’re going to be training,” Knudsen said as the Warriors try for a sweep Thursday against Island School.
Waimea boys team was led by Kekoa Masuda who finished with a 240 (85-82-73). He was followed by Jared Coleman-Stark (88-82-62-232), Kevin Aguilar (80-64-70-214), Bronson Koki (81-70-63-214) and Kainalu Barino (84-78-33-195).
Syanne Sagawa took the lead for the Waimea girls team with a 232 (83-82-67), followed by Merschelle Rivera (84-78-67-229), Kelly Joyce (77-77-72-226), Rachel Wright (88-71-65-224) and Ceci Sun (77-86-54-217).
Heather Walker topped the Kapa‘a girls, coming up just a point short of Waimea’s Sagawa. Walker finished with a 231 (89-82-60), followed by Marie Joy Agacid (82-80-66-228), Lani Kunioka-Volz (85-77-57-219), Kamala Rojas (79-87-34-200) and Camden Lorenz (84-45-46-175).
Cody Navarro topped the Kaua‘i boys with a 245 (91-85-69) in their victory over Island School. Kelan Adachi (88-80-74-242), Jason Cabot (89-78-71-238), Anthony Remitio (82-73-79-234) and Elliott Yamamoto (82-79-65-226) followed in the scoring.
Erik Talvi had high-point honors for the Island School boys with a 225 (83-71-71), followed by Justin Pelton (82-75-54-211), Carlos Maibeth-Mortimer (72-74-51-197), Trev Bloom (76-62-47-185) and Mikaiah Vea (83-56-37-176).
Casey Shimokawa copped high-point honors on the day for the Red Raider girls’ team, finishing with a 259 (89-86-84) to lead the team scoring. Liane Muraoka (95-78-75-248), Maureen Sibolboro (85-80-72-237), Charissa Riofta (80-84-59-223) and Megan Rasay (69-77-46-192) followed.
Richelle Ridenour topped the Island School girls’ scores at 248 (91-83-74), followed by Michelle Woltmon (90-73-65-228), Maddisen Domingo (85-77-53-215), Beatrice Wu (79-56-23-158) and Destiny DeTreaux (81-32-44-157).
Thursday’s matches will see Waimea host Kaua‘i at the Hanapepe Armory and Kapa‘a host Island School. All matches start at 3 p.m.
