County officials released the names of the two Lihu‘e residents in a 2004 Suzuki SUV that was struck by a garbage truck on Kuhio Highway south of the Wailua River Thursday.
Norvin Alvarado, 38, was pronounced dead at the scene shortly before 4 p.m. He was riding behind driver Pacita Ganiron, 64, who was admitted to Wilcox Memorial Hospital for observation.
The 22-year-old driver of the Garden Isle Disposal truck was not injured. Police said alcohol and speed did not appear to be factors in the accident.
Ganiron was attempting to turn left onto Kuhio Highway when the northbound truck broadsided the SUV. Police said the driver of the truck appeared to have slammed on his brakes but could not avoid the Suzuki.
Alvarado is the 12th traffic fatality on Kaua‘i this year.
