Hats off to Greg Gonsalves and all his Kapa‘a High ‘ohana for doing such a great job with the first KIF cross country meet Saturday. Coach Ron Velasco (gotta get used to seeing that green) was in the right places and Calvin Paleka was his usual hustling self as he watched the order enter the finish chute … he even stopped to help steady a wobbly runner and never missed a beat. How do they do these things after a Friday night football game?
Charlene Quinones was in Kapa‘a for the second time in three days (she was at the riflery matches Thursday).
Col. Jerald Knudsen and his Kapa‘a J.R.O.T.C. cadets were having a busy week as well, competing in riflery, helping out at Make A Splash, doing color guard and food booth duty at the football game and helping Catherine Paleka lay out a marching band course at school.
Maggie Martin said daughter Rachel is running for Chaminade (isn’t that where Roy Asher’s soccer player is?) and one of the boys is running up in Portland. Calvin Paleka said one of the other runners is at the Allegenany College. Actually, Rachel finished the BYUH Invitational in the top five for Chaminade Saturday.
Gwen Tamura was helping as was Nellie Okamoto who said everything was OK as long as he didn’t have to think … was too early for that.
And, if you wanted patriotic for voting, Bill Troutman was decked out in his red, white and blue shirt and passing out flag stickers to the keiki who came to vote with their parents … even daughter Caroline was helping with the registration in Kilauea.
