Irons brothers get good show in France
HOSSEGOR, France —
Kaua‘i’s Andy Irons and Association of Surfing Professionals ratings front-runner Kelly Slater notched solid wins in Round 1 of the Quiksilver Pro presented by Evian Saturday.
The event, the eighth of 11 on this year’s tour, was held in six feet-plus beachbreak-type waves at Hossegor located in the south of France, and spectacular barrel-riding was the norm.
Irons and Slater were two of the day’s standouts as both found plenty of time riding inside the bellies of some sand-crunching beasts.
Irons tore into his heat to surpass France’s Patrick Bevan and Australia’s Shaun Cansdell with relative ease.
“I’ve had a really good run here for the last couple of years,” Irons said. “I’m definitely not counting on anything, but I’m going to go out there and surf my best and that’s all I can do. It actually looks a lot like Hawai‘i — it’s just beautiful.”
Kaua‘i’s Bruce Irons put on a display, scoring a near perfect total of 19.57 out of 20 points by pulling into two long, stand-up barrels and leaving the crowd baying for more.
Organizers will meet this morning to assess conditions and make a decision regarding continuing the meet.
The forecast for the next few days indicates the weather could turn nasty, but swell permitting, either Round 2 or an expression session are likely to hit the water.
