On Jan. 11, kumu hula Roselle Keli‘ihonipua Bailey will lead select members of her halau on a cultural exchange to South India. The group will begin in Chennai and move south, sharing the stories, lessons and beauty of hula over a 10-day period.
They also hope to learn of a “sister culture” along the way.
“While seemingly diverse, both are spiritually-intoxicated cultures which share a deep love of family, food, story-telling and, of course, dance,” states a press release promoting the trip.
Ka‘Imi Na‘auao o Hawai‘i Nei, whose mission is to search for the truth of Hawaiian culture, is working with the Kolam Charitable Foundation, which promotes economic independence for communities in Tamil Nadu, South India. This huaka‘i, or journey, will raise money for various schools and villages, including tsunami victims of South India .
This Saturday, the two organizations are hosting a fund-raising event called “Kihapai Kou Mana — Tending Your Spiritual Essence,” showcasing a gourmet Indian luncheon.
Anyone is invite to come relax and enjoy live entertainment, swimming, yoga, massage, energy therapy, spa treatments and Indian cuisine demonstrations.
