LIHU‘E — T.J. Kua shot a 143 combined 36-hole total over two days to take top honors in the Boys 15-18 Hawai‘i State Junior Golf Association 2006 Junior Tour Series at Puakea Golf Course.
Kua tied the course record from the championship tees on Sunday, aided by four birdies and one eagle to score a 6-under-par 66. Kua tied the record set by Kapa‘a’s Casey Watabu, who in July won the 81st Amateur Public Links Championship and qualified for the 2007 Masters.
The format of the two-day HSJGA tournament called for three tournaments played over two days. The top three winners from Day 1 and Day 2 will join the top three combined scores of both days at the Tournament of Champions at Wailua, Maui in December. Kua’s 143 nabbed the combined top spot, and his Sunday 66 helped secure the Day 2 win.
Seven Kaua‘i junior golfers earned slots to the upcoming tournament.
Miki Ueoka punched her ticket Saturday by finishing first in the 15-18 Girls division on a score of 77 (40-37). She finished second in the combined 36-hole with a 155 (77-78).
Noel Torres of Waimea carded a 76 on Saturday but fell short in a playoff with Alex Ching of Honolulu. Both golfers will go on to compete at Wailua in December. T.J. Kua finished third on Saturday at 77 (40-37).
Levi Miyashiro of Wailua finished second in the 13-14 Boys division Sunday, breaking par at 72 (37-35). Miyashiro also finished second in that division in the combined 36-hole scoring, posting a 150 (78-72).
Wiley Yoshioka of Lihu‘e finished third in the 13-14 Boys round Sunday shooting a 76 (37-39).
