Kapa‘a High’s Class of 1951 enjoyed an “awesome” four days recently as they celebrated their 55th reunion.
Larry Rivera and his daughter Lurline entertained at the aloha reception at Kauai Beach Resort on Aug. 23. The next day was dedicated to a tour down memory lane as the group visited the campus of Kapaa High School singing the school “Alma Mater” led by band teacher Catherine Paleka. The Alma Mater was introduced during the Class of 1951’s senior year, classmates explained. The tour ended in the school cafeteria where the group was served school lunches.
The afternoon held heavy pupus and later the Kaua‘i residents hosted an evening at a beach house in Anahola. The evening wrapped up with fishing, talk stories and card games.
On Aug. 25, Larry Rivera, his daughter Ilima and the Little Menehunes performed during a banquet at Hanama‘ulu Cafe. Games, stories, jokes and old pictures were shared and enjoyed during the evening.
The next day was “Hang Loose” day at Wailua Homesteads Park with more games, jokes and a talent show. The day ended with a baseball game.
Witnesses reported that “it took forever to reach first base but it was full of fun and laughter.”
The Kaua‘i committee consisted of chair Arthur Fujita, Barbara Tsunehiro Yamane, Paul Nishijo, Henry Hashimoto, Gilbert Tanaka, Larry Rivera, Florence Nakamasu Wakuta, James Valdez, Jennis Iida Christian, honorary member Dee Dee Gorospe, Leatrice Yamagata Tanaka, Hazel Kubo Kobayashi and Elaine Urabe Tamura.
