Freshman Tyler Navarro was excited and nervous at the same time. Tyler, younger brother of Kaua‘i High School marksman Cody Navarro, was making his first appearance at the KIF Air riflery matches.
“He was so excited when he qualified,” Red Raider Boys Coach Douglas Nobriga said. “He’s only a freshman, this is his first match, but I think he’ll do all right because he plays piano and that should help him focus.”
Tyler was one of the five Red Raider boys who counted as Kaua‘i outshot the Menehune 1,142 to 1,031 to improve to 2-0 on the young season.
Similarly, the Red Raider girls saw three female sharpshooters rack up 235s en route to Kaua‘i getting past Waimea 1,159 to 1,023, improving to 2-0 on the season.
“We have a lot of first-year shooters,” WHS coach Victor Aguilar said. “We graduated 10 from the boys and 10 from the girls last year. But, Kaua‘i is strong — they have a lot of their returning shooters who have improved over their last year’s performances.”
Topping the Menehune men, Jared Coleman-Stark finished with 214 (75-75-64) points. Veteran marksman Kekoa Masuda chalked up 213 (69-76-42) points, followed by Bryson Koki (75-69-69-210), second-year shooter Kevin Aguilar (76-63-65-204) and Daniel Kalauawa (76-81-33-190).
Cody Navarro led the Raider boys with 240 (89-83-68) points.Aaron Braun, who led the Raiders to a win over Island School last week, tallied 228 (84-82-62). Kelan Adachi (80-77-70-227), Jason Cabot (84-77-70-231) and Tyler Navarro (81-72-63-216) rounded out the scoring.
Liane Muraoka (88-78-70), Charissa Riofta (87-83-66) and Casey Shimokawa (81-82-73) paced the Red Raider girls with 236 points each. Other shooters who counted included Maureen Sibolboro (90-76-69-235) and Contessa Ricci (83-69-64-216).
Veteran shooter Kelly Joyce led the Menehune ladies with 219 (83-76-60) points. Other Menehune ladies who counted include Mershelle Rivera (77-80-56-213), Beverly Grande (86-65-51-202), Ceci Sun (79-71-51-201) and Syanne Sagawa (74-79-35-188).
With the win, Kaua‘i takes to the road when they visit Kapa‘a Thursday. On the same day, Island School visits Waimea at Hanapepe Stadium. Matches start at 3 p.m.
