When the dust settles this afternoon at Kaua‘i High School, there will be only one air riflery team in the lead.
Kaua‘i hosts defending KIF champion Waimea at 3 p.m. after both teams won their respective matches last week.
Totaling 1,148 and 1,133 points for the boys and girls team, respectively, the Red Raiders beat out Island School, which finished with 868 team points for the boys and 981 team points for their girls.
Aaron Braun topped the Red Raider boys with a 243 total accumulated through the Prone (86), Kneeling (79) and Standing (78) positions.
Other Red Raider boys who counted in the scoring included Jason Cabot (87-75-63-225), Cody Navarro (92-83-71-246), Elliott Yamamoto (82-75-62-219) and Cory Oride (80-80-55-215).
Casey Shimokawa (85-89-68-242) topped the Red Raider lady shooters. Maureen Sibolboro (74-71-61-206), Contessa Ricci (86-82-64-232), Charissa Riofta (89-88-63-240) and Liane Muraoka (84-67-62-213) made up the victorious Kaua’i lady sharpshooters.
Erik Talvi (85-67-56-208) led the Island School boys, followed by Carlos Maibeth-Mortimer (82-36-49-167), Skyler Workman (70-67-41-178), Kenji Ruttar (59-56-41-156) and Trev Bloom (76-48-35-159), who accumulated 868 points for their team.
Richelle Ridenour (77-79-68-224) topped the Island School ladies, followed closely by Sky Smith (84-74-62-220), Michelle Woltmon (88-62-58-208), Son-ya James (71-74-29-174) and Beatrice Wu (70-53-32-155). The women shooters accumulated 981 points.
Waimea, which won its opening matches against Kapa‘a High School last week, also tallied marks in the 1,100-point range.
“I don’t know what we marked, but I know it was in the 1,100’s,” said Waimea coach Maj. Victor Aguilar. “Kapa‘a also shot well with their scores going over 1,000.”
No scores were available for the Waimea/Kapa’a contests, but the coach from Kapa‘a felt confident in his crew of riflery students, noting they made mistakes they could have avoided during the competition. He said they would be working on correcting these prior to their match against Island School.
Last year, the boys’ competition was settled in a shoot-out between Kaua‘i and Waimea marksmen. With the Red Raider boys marking in the mid-1,100-point range, this afternoon’s match should be a close one.
Kapa’a squares off at Island School at 3 p.m.
