HANA, Maui — The six-man Kaua‘i Masters team finished the recent Hana Relays second overall.
According to team member Leo McCarthy, this was the team’s eighth appearance at the event and the relay squad finished with a time of 5:23:23, or a pace of 6:14.
First place in the event was taken by the Hawai‘i Foodbank, a men’s team, who stopped the clock at 4:44:41 at a pace of 5:29.
Hot on the heels of the Kaua‘i team, Little Fredies finished at 5:24:02. Both Little Fredies and Kaua‘i Masters finished with a 6:14 clip.
The Polar Punks, an Open team, and Polli’s Hot Tamales, a Mixed Masters team, rounded out the leader board at 5:37:05 and 5:40:35, respectively.
“The 52-mile relay from Kahului to Hana was held in grand style as usual this year,” McCarthy said in an e-mail. “With seven wins in the Master division (40 and up), the pressure was on.”
McCarthy said 114 six-person teams entered the event this year from around the state and the Mainland.
“When the smoke cleared, the Kaua‘i Masters had taken second overall, only being beaten by a Kenyan team,” McCarthy said. “The gods were smiling and the Kaua‘i Boys had the best day ever.”
For McCarthy and crew, this was their eighth consecutive win in their division.
“Not bad for a bunch of guys over 40,” McCarthy said. “We just beat the Maui High School cross country team by a minute. Pretty cool — we were all really stoked.”
