HONOLULU — The MD Wenokea Super Seniors of Honolulu and the McCulley Ducks captured the Super Senior Section Championships Sunday.
“Kaua‘i fielded four teams for this Super Senior Sectionals,” said Janice Weiner, whose husband Bob is the captain of the Kaua‘i Kanes, a 7.0 team. “I don’t know how the other teams did, but the Kaua‘i Kanes won third in their division.”
Over 27 teams took part in the championships at the Central O‘ahu Regional Park that started Thursday.
Weiner said the Kaua‘i teams included a 7.0 men’s team, a 3.5 team, a women’s 3.0 team and a men’s 4.0 team.
“Haru Watanabe, one of the Kaua‘i Kanes, was given the Most Inspirational award after he was hospitalized for tests after he complained of chest pains during the matches,” Weiner said. “But he’s OK now.”
With the win, the Super Senior Women and Super Senior Men teams bring the number to six teams from the Hawai‘i Pacific Section/United States Tennis Association that have advanced to the national championship round of the largest adult recreational tennis league in the world.
Players in the Super Senior league are aged 60 years and above.
