The Kaua‘i Police Department issued an official warning late last week about an e-mail scam that has been circulating in recent weeks.
Police officials have recently received complaints from victims of a fraudulent e-mail campaign and are urging the public not to reply to this type of solicitation.
Those who did respond have had their bank accounts depleted.
According to a police press release, the e-mail targets customers of HFS Federal Credit Union.
The message claims that fraudulent activities have occurred on some of HFSFCU’s online accounts and therefore the company has just implemented a new security system. In order to prove that the customer’s account remains secure, account details would need to be provided.
“We urge the public to ignore this type of communication whether it’s an e-mail message, letter or a telephone call,” states the KPD release.
Those who are contacted about their bank accounts should call their respective financial institutions for verification of such inquiries.
