HILO — Chas Okamoto made a mark on the Big Island after he won both the B14 singles and B14 doubles at the Hilo Sectional Tournament for tennis during the Labor Day weekend.
“Chas struck the ball very well throughout the tournament and his aggressive play surprised his bigger opponents,” his dad Charlie said in an e-mail. “And Chas also served very well.”
The 12-year-old from Princeville was undeeded in the B14 singles class and battled both the No. 1 seed Brandon Sera and No. 2 seed Douglas Ho in the semis and finals of that class.
Against Sera, Okamoto took the semifinal 1-6, 6-2 and 1-0 before advancing against Ho whom Okamoto edged 2-6, 6-3 and 1-0 for the title.
Teamed with Shaun Chow, Okamoto’s team was seeded No. 1 in the B14 doubles division and took the title with a 6-1, 6-2 showing over the No. 2 team of Logan Chun and William Chen in the finals.
