Defending world champion Chelsea Georgeson lucked out on a fading swell to defend her Rip Curl Mademoiselle Pro title Monday in France.
Georgeson managed one ride of 9 points out of 10 to beat out Melanie Redman-Carr in an all-Australian final.
In claiming her first win of the year in France, Georgeson piled up 15.65 points to Redman-Carr’s 10.25.
Redman-Carr, with 4,752 points, regained the lead in the world ratings she lost to Layne Beachley in the previous Brazilian event.
Beachley was knocked out in the quarter-finals of the Mademoiselle and is now second with 4,269 points.
Georgeson, who took out Hawai‘i’s Megan Abubo in the quarter-finals, controls the third slot with 4,044 points with three events remaining on the eight-round championship circuit.
In the points rating, Hawai‘i’s Rochelle Ballard leads in tenth place with 2,196 points followed by Abubo in 12th place with 2,184 points, tying with Keala Kennelly.
The next event will be the Havaianas Beachley Classic at Sydney, Australia’s Manly Beach in early October.
UH claims Outrigger Classic title
WAIPIO, O‘ahu — Kelli-Anne Chang scored two goals and assisted on another to lead the University of Hawai‘i women’s soccer to its third straight win Sunday.
The UH soccer team dominated Winthrop for a 3-0 win for the championship of the Outrigger Hotels & Resorts Soccer Classic at the Waipio Peninsula Soccer Stadium on O‘ahu.
The Rainbow Wahine outshot Winthrop 20-4 and allowed just a single shot on goal for the Eagles.
This was Hawai‘i’s (3-1-0) second 3-0 shutout and the team was able to play its entire 23-player roster.
Following Chang, midfielder Kristen Oshiro punched in the other Rainbow Wahine goal, the first of her career.
UH struck in the 18th minute when Jessica Domingo passed into the Winthrop box, finding the head of Ambree Ako.
The ball bounced back to Chang who hammered a left-footer from 25 yards into the upper right corner for her first career goal.
Tehane Higa headed the Chang ball from the right flank in the 26th minute bear the six-yard box.
Oshiro was waiting and nailed the close-range shot for the 2-0 halftime lead.
Chang closed the book six minutes following the break on assists from Oshiro and Taryn Fukuroku.
The Rainbow Wahine head to the road for the first time when they travel to Arizona for three matches starting with a meeting against Pacific in the CATS Classic Friday.
