The Kauai Filipino Women’s Club will hold its 42nd Annual Terno Ball on Sept. 16 at 6 p.m. at the Kauai Marriott Beach Resort. General admission is $40 per person and $50 for preferred seating. Participation in this event whether by purchasing a ticket, placing an ad or sponsorship in the souvenir book, donating cash for trophies and prizes, or by donating time to perform in the program will allow the club to generate funds for its scholarship program which directly benefits three local high school seniors.
In a brief historical account of the Terno, Filipinos call it the masterpiece, a classic, a national treasure, a magic, an art and timeless. Terno comes from the Spanish word meaning “to match.” It was a coming together of the innovations of many designers. The Terno alludes to the matching of blouse and skirt, joined to the waist to form a one-piece creation, with both bodice and skirt made of the same material. Pioneering fashion designers like Pacita Longos, Juanita Roa, and Ramon Valera innovated on the Terno, and their designs elevated this national costume to a world-class high fashion statement.
Terno is an art, not only a source of identity but also of national pride. Both the Terno and the Barong Tagalog (men’s wear) are worn by dignitaries in the Philippines and in many parts of the world including Hawaii.
On the occasion of the 42nd annual festivity, and in keeping with the Filipino Centennial Celebration, this year’s Terno Ball will showcase an evening of elegance, entertainment, sumptuous dinner, fashion contests and dancing.
