PRINCEVILLE — County officials announced yesterday that the Princeville bottle redemption center is closing, effective immediately.
Ongoing problems with storage capacity and equipment hauling were cited as reasons the operator decided to close.
Plans are being made to open a redemption center in Hanalei in the near future, states a Department of Public Works press release.
The county will make an announcement when the center is ready to open.
In the meantime, residents may visit any of the bottle redemption centers on the island:
• Kapahi, behind the Menehune Food Mart on Kawaihau Road, open Tuesday through Saturday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
• Kekaha, at the Kekaha Landfill, Wednesday and Saturday, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.
• Lawa‘i, at the Lawa‘i Post Office, Wednesday and Saturday, 8 a.m. to 3 p.m.
• Lihu‘e, at Garden Isle Disposal on Niumalu Road, Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 4 a.m., and Saturday, 8 a.m. to noon.
• Nawiliwili, near the old Hale Kaua‘i building, Tuesday through Saturday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
All redemption sites except for Kekaha are closed for lunch between noon and 1 p.m.. Those visiting the centers are encouraged to arrive at least 30 minutes before lunch and closing.
Another option for recycling beverage containers on the North Shore without redemption is to drop off the containers in the Kaua‘i Recycles drop bin at the Hanalei Transfer Station in Princeville. The transfer station is open daily, 7:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., except holidays.
Residents may also donate and drop off HI5 recyclables at the Hanalei Canoe Club, Hanalei Community Center and Kula High & Intermediate School in Kilauea, the release states.
