HONOLULU — The search is on for an important leadership position in the state. The Probate Court has appointed a Trustee Screening Committee to assist in the selection of a Kamehameha Schools trustee. The new trustee will complete the remaining portion of Trustee Constance Lau’s term. Trustee Lau resigned after being appointed Hawaiian Electric Industries chief executive officer and will continue to fulfill her duties until a successor is named. She has served as a Kamehameha trustee since 1999.
The Trustee Screening Committee will present a list of three candidates to the Probate Court. From that list, the court will name the new trustee. The appointee will fill in the unexpired portion from the date of appointment to June 30, 2008, and could qualify for re-appointment for either a maximum of two additional consecutive terms of five years each, or for one additional five-year term, to be determined by the Court.
The committee is looking for active leaders within the community with a deep sense of commitment and the ability to ensure Princess Bernice Pauahi Bishop’s vision and legacy continue to be carried out. The ideal candidate must possess a reputation of integrity and good character, a consistent and active leadership role in the community with specific emphasis on issues impacting the well-being of the people of Hawai‘i, and a willingness and sincerity to uphold the purposes of Kamehameha Schools. Respect for and from the community as well as outstanding personal traits, including Hawaiian values, are desired.
In addition to a formal education, the candidate must have demonstrated expertise in business administration, finance and investment, strategic planning and policy setting. The candidate should have experience in the areas of interest to Kamehameha Schools, which include education, law, finance or governance.
The Trustee Screening Committee, made up of seven volunteer community members, is comprised of Robert A. Alm, Esq., Dr. Claire L. Asam, George “Keoki” Freeland, Francis A. Keala, Melody K. MacKenzie, Esq., Benjamin M. Matsubara, Esq. and Michael E. Rawlins.
Qualified candidates should submit a resume, cover letter and a statement on their view of the role of a trustee, their vision, goals and objectives for the trust estate and what they would do to attain those goals.
