Last chance to see Gore’s ‘Inconvenient Truth’
Today is the last showing of former vice president Al Gore’s film, “An Inconvenient Truth,” at Kukui Grove Theater. The senator’s take on global warming has earned praise from respected critics and scientists from across the United States and the world.
The last showing is tonight at 7:45 p.m.
Amber Alert test tomorrow
cials announced a statewide Maile Amber Alert test tomorrow at 11:45 a.m., utilizing the state Civil Defense emergency alert siren system.
Maile Amber are acronyms for Minor Abducted in Life-threatening Emergency and America’s Missing Broadcast Emergency Response.
The bi-annual test is being conducted to ensure that equipment is working properly on each island and procedures are followed in case an actual alert is necessary, states a county press release.
The Maile Amber Alert program was established in Hawai‘i a year ago as a partnership between the four county police departments, Attorney General’s Missing Child Center — Hawai‘i, state Civil Defense, state Department of Transportation and the media.
The aim of the program is to notify the public when a child has been abducted and solicit help in locating the child and abductor.
According to Lt. Jon Takamura, head of KPD’s Investigative Services — Youth Services Section, a Maile Amber Alert would be issued if an abducted victim is 17-years-old or younger and is believed to be in a life-threatening situation.
“The program is designed to spread the word statewide and help us find children who have been abducted as quickly as possible,” said Takamura in the release.
The Maile Amber Alert program was named in memory of 6-year-old Maile Gilbert of Kailua, O‘ahu and nine-year-old Amber Hagerman of Arlington, Texas.
Maile was kidnapped from Kailua in 1985 and murdered shortly afterward. The man who killed her was located several hours after it happened and is serving a life term in prison.

Surfrider Foundation opens Kaua‘i chapter
The Surfrider Foundation, a national coastal environmental group with 65 chapters in the United States, is opening a Kaua‘i chapter with its first general meeting tomorrow at the Lihu‘e Neighborhood Center from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m.
The first general meeting will focus on community involvement, a foundation press release states. Gordon LaBedz, principal organizer of the Surfrider Foundation chapter network, will explain community involvement and what it means to have a chapter on Kaua’i. LaBedz has been a leader in the environmental movement for the past 30 years.
The Surfrider Foundation has a national water quality program called the Blue Water Task Force, in which volunteers test local water quality and educate the public on the threats to beach water. Agricultural and golf course run off, leaky septic tanks and cesspools, paved industrial areas and parking lots are just some of the issues that affect water quality, the release states. The Surfrider Foundation also works for public beach access and against “hardening” of the seashores for they diminish beaches and destroy wetlands, the release states.
