HANAPEPE — Alan-Michael Gaspar had two touchdowns and an intercepted pass to lead Waimea to a 38-0 win over the Waiakea Warriors Saturday night in Hanapepe Stadium.
The win gives the KIF a weekend sweep on the opening weekend of pre-season football as Kaua‘i went away with a 28-2 victory over Keau High School and Kapa‘a shut down HPA 27-0 Saturday afternoon.
Gaspar, who finished the outing with 116 yards rushing, sparked the second Menehune drive with 38 yards to set up the first score reaped by Ikaika Rapacon on a 3-yard charge to paydirt.
Allen Pancho, finishing 3-3 in PAT, graced the score at the 2:15 mark of the first quarter.
Gaspar broke into the scorebooks with his two TDs in the second quarter, the first coming on an 8-yard charge and the second coming on a 1-yarder to the opposite side after Waiakea defender Kuran Murata broke up a 23-yard run at the 1-yard line.
Pancho kicked both PATs for the 23-0 halftime lead.
Oni Schmidt, who finished with 95 yards rushing, upped the Waimea ante in the third frame and a bad snap on a Waiakea punt attempt saw the lead stretch 32-0 after three quarters. Schmidt’s score came on a defensive turnover after Anson Achara pounced on a Waiakea fumble.
Jayrald Watanabe iced the victory on a 34-yard scramble with just two seconds peeled off the final quarter for the 38-0 margin.
Waimea defense kept Waiakea in negative yardage throughout the contest with injuries plaguing the visiting squad as well. The Warriors finished with minus 37 yards overall according to stats from “Anahola” Joel Pahukula of KQNG radio who provided live broadcast of the contest.
Overall, Waimea left the field with 380 yards rushing with Gaspar and Schmidt leading the charge.
