Chris Woo, arguably the finest swimmer Hawai‘i has ever known, will be featured at Mokihana Aquatics’ annual ‘Fun Meet,’ from Aug. 20 to 21 at Kaua‘i High School’s pool.
Woo competed in the 1976 Olympics and helped the U.S. relay team to a gold in the individual medley.
“I wouldn’t miss this event, especially with Woo there, it should be something you make some time for,” Mokihana Aquatics head coach Orlando Anaya said.
Woo swam competitively for 16 years and is one of the state’s leading experts on breastroke and competitive swimming. He will be conducting a free open forum stroke clinic for swimmers of all ages on Aug. 20, from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m.
The 2nd Annual Kahu Kai fastest swimmer competition will start the day’s events at 9 a.m.
The fastest swimmer on Kaua‘i competition is open to all male and female swimmers (residents of Kaua‘i only) of all ages to swim 50 yards of freestyle. Top three prizes combined are $500 cash.
Last year’s winner Keenan Anaya, a Kaua‘i High School graduate and University of Hawai‘i at Manoa prospective swimmer, will not be competing this year due to school obligations.
In 2005, the Kahu Kai Fastest Swimmer Competition attracted 16 of Kaua‘i’s top swimmers — eight males and eight females.
For registration information, call Orlando at 821-0587.
The ‘Fun Meet’ is a fundraiser for Mokihana Aquatics. The annual fun meet holds events no longer than 200 yards.
It is a chance for swim clubs across the state to get together, have fun and enjoy the competition.
Annually, the largest apple and orange bob takes place at Kaua‘i High School’s pool at the end of the two-day event.
Mokihana Aquatics is a non-profit organization dedicated to the promotion of ocean and pool water safety training for children and adults.
