Certainly not Kaua‘i Polo Club’s Krista Bonaguidi, who’s hosting the annual Wahine Tournament on Sunday at the ‘Anini Polo Field.
The unique event features a women’s team vs. a men’s squad.
“Last year the same team of women waxed the men’s team,” Kaua‘i Polo Club’s John Love said. “It was a convincing victory.”
Along with Bonaguidi, the Wahine team includes Kate Weber, Trish Fitzgerald and Malia Boles.
“The Kane team will need Kaua‘i Fire Department to keep this fire under control,” Kaua‘i Polo Club’s announcer Inger Pa said.
Weber is a one-handicap player from El Dorado Polo Club in Indio, Calif.
Fitzgerald also hails from the same area as Weber and is a zero-handicap athlete.
“Katie is a professional polo instructor and trainer,” Pa said. “She organizes a private polo club at Deer Creek in Indio. Trish is an achieved hunter, jumper rider and a professional polo horse trainer.”
Boles is a one-handicap player from Union, Ore., and is a part of the Spokane Polo Club.
“She rescues abused or neglected horses and trains them for polo,” Pa said. “She’s a great trainer and player.”
Tahiti Nui is in charge of keeping fans refreshed throughout the contest.
“They’ll have their famous Tiki Man Pizza and mini manapuas and sandwiches for everyone,” Pa said.
The Kaua‘i Polo Club is just mauka of the ‘Anini Beach Park.
The gate opens at 1:30 p.m. on Sunday and the game starts at 3 p.m.
Adult tickets are $10; ages 12 through 17 cost $5; and kids under 12 get in for free.
Call 635-4687 on gameday to check for rain delays.
The public is also invited to attend a free practice session at about 4 p.m. today.
