The hot rods are ready for another bout on the Westside.
National Hot Rods Association-sanctioned drag racing blasts off again tomorrow night at Kaua‘i Raceway Park at Mana.
“Heading into the second half of the season, points action is heating up and very close after July’s competition,” Garden Isle Racing Association president Bill Turk said in an e-mail. “All classes are still up for grabs with no clear front-runners in any of the categories.”
Turk also said Manny Lawrence, who has recovered from his illness and hospitalization at the last race, promises his ‘ohana will come back strong in Pro ET and Muscle V8 in an effort to pick up valuable points lost by missing half of the July races.
“You’ll see everything from blown fuel dragsters and door slammers in the Destination Autoworks Pro ET class, street and race bikes in the Suzuki Kaua‘i class, to vintage hot rods and muscle cars in Auto Stylin/ Island Embroidery’s Muscle V8 class,” Turk said.
The kids will be competing in the NAPA PS&D Jr. Dragster class for youths between the ages of 8 to 17 years.
The Street Legal cars and the very fast Sport Compacts will be on the track competing in their respective categories. All racers will be competing for cash and trophies, and of course the all-important bragging rights for the winners. All vehicles must pass technical inspections and register before 3 p.m. All drivers must wear a helmet to race.
Kaua‘i Raceway Park is located about five miles west of Waimea (1 mile past Kekaha) of Highway 50. Gates open at a new time for racers at 11 a.m., with tech inspection and race registration closing at 3 p.m. Spectator gate opens at noon, with time trails from to 2 p.m. to 6 p.m., and bracket racing starting at 7 p.m.
Admission is $12 with kids 12-and-under, free.
“It’s tailgate-style so bring your chair and umbrella and have a picnic under the stars and enjoy racing until 11 p.m. tomorrow night,” Turk said.
