For the first time ever, a Kaua‘i youth polo program is beginning to take shape.
In conjunction with the Kaua‘i Polo Club, youths ages 10 to 18 are invited to be a part of history.
“I’m really excited about starting a junior polo program,” Kaua‘i youth polo program coordinator Bette Layton said. “The goal is to interest young people with this fantastic sport.”
Later this month, Layton is putting together clinics to get youths acquainted with polo.
“It’s an introduction,” Layton said. “We’re trying to get kids with horses, but if they don’t have one, we’ll try our best to help them out. If they keep it up, they might be on the field playing next year.”
Kaua‘i Polo player Kamalu Sheldon is taking on the lead instructor’s position.
“He’s basically done every job for the club,” Layton said. “So he knows the ins and outs of what it takes to become a good player and he’s just really interested in working with the kids.”
Layton said as she watched a professional player’s son last Sunday she was reminded of the great need for a junior polo program on the island.
“He ran circles around the other guys,” she said. “He was fun to watch.”
Anyone interested in helping out the program or if you’d like to get your youth involved, call Bette Layton at 826-4472.
