Kauaians are blessed to be surrounded by the beauty of lush tropical environments. However, living in this environment can have its drawbacks — Kaua‘i has the highest rate of asthma of all the Hawaiian Islands.
On July 20, almost 200 people attended the Third Annual Asthma Humanitarian Event at the Qi Center in Immaculate Conception School in Lihu‘e. Asthma sufferers, as well as those with allergies, chronic bronchitis, sinus problems, lung disease and lung-related illnesses participated in the free event, sponsored by the Qi Center in partnership with the University of Hawai‘i John A. Burns School of Medicine.
“My daughter Aliana had been having chest colds every other month for two years,” said Kathy Ho of Kalaheo. “Three years ago we went to the asthma event and since then, she doesn’t have the chronic colds.”
Ho said her daughter’s school attendance has improved as a result.
The Qi Center — which combines traditional Chinese and Western medicine — has another event scheduled for this Sunday, and another on Aug. 19, both from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m.
Participants will learn about natural foods and recipes, reflexology points and energy-based exercises that can help relive the symptoms of asthma, allergy and other lung-related conditions in partnership with traditional medical treatment.
