Don’t blame the Garden Island Boyz for picking up a playoff victory by forfeit over the Hawai‘i Warriors yesterday in Hawai‘i World Series action on O‘ahu.
Maybe they were scared, maybe they knew how tough it would be to defeat the Kaua‘i 12-and-under squad, but at any rate, the Garden Isle squad moved into the quarterfinals with a 5-0 record.
“The other team didn’t show up,” Garden Island head coach Kirk Correa said over the phone. “We was waiting and other team said they weren’t playing.”
The Garden Island Boyz are the only undefeated team in their division.
“Well the kids have been doing good,” Correa said. “We knew they could perform and they’re playing good together.”
Correa credits strong work on the mound for keeping them in the hunt.
“Our pitching is really well,” he said. “I think today we’re going to pitch and use John Das and Chyson Soares.”
The team plays at 11:30 a.m. today against the winner of the Mexico Blanco/Windward contest.
“We move into the semifinals if we win,” Correa said.
In Sunday’s first game, GIB blanked Kane‘ohe, 8-0, behind a masterful performance from Chyson Soares, who pitched a complete game two-hit shutout, while striking out six.
Bronson Aiwohi (2-2, 2B), Dallas Correa (1-2, RBI, 2 runs), Chyson Soares (1-2, 2B, RBI), Kaimana Jose (1-2, 1 RBI), Shylen Keuma (1 hit) and Joey Bagain led GIB at the plate.
In the second contest, GIB blasted Mexico Blanco, 12-0, thanks to three home runs from Perreira-Alquiza, Brandon Kaupe and Tylen Remata.
Mikeo Rita, Correa, Jose, Soares and Alika Emayo contributed with a hit apiece.
Rita picked up the victory on the mound, allowing just one hit and striking out two batters. Defensively, GIB turned two double plays.
On Monday, GIB trounced the Kahalu‘u Warriors, 16-2, as Correa and John Das combined for a one-hitter on the mound.
Correa took the win. Remata and Das each slammed a home run to lead GIB’s efforts at the plate.
Emayo, Correa, Perreira-Alquiza and Aiwohi each chipped in for a hit.
GIB grabbed an 8-3 win over Kinipopo on Tuesday.
Kinipopo is primarily made up of players from Windward and ‘Aiea Bronco All-Stars, who eliminated West Kaua‘i’s All-Stars a few weeks ago in Waimea.
Perreira-Alquiza got the victory on the mound and Rita earned the save.
Correa (2-3, 3B), Rita (2B), Emayo (1B), Soares (1B), Remata (1B) and Kaupe (1B) paced GIB in the batter’s box.
Team members are Kaimana Perreira-Alquiza, Dallas Correa, Mikeo Rita, Chyson Soares, Tylan Remata, Shylen-John Keuma, Bryson Tacata, Bronson Aiwohi, John Das, Alika Emayo, Brandon Kaupe, Kaimana Jose and Joey Bagain Jr.
Kirk Correa, Nick Alquiza, Teddy Perreira, Jesus Tacata and Bryan Aiwohi coaches the squad.
Meanwhile, in the 19-and-under division, Southside Kaua‘i is 2-2-1, after a 13-2 win yesterday over Cal Blaze.
Southside plays at 2 p.m. today in a playoff contest. Weslyn Masumura, Stanton Yoshimori, Travis Fontanilla, Keith Naka‘ahiki, Troy Yamase, Aaron Adachi, Cody Goias, Dane Christy, Loren Duarte, Shannon Oketani and Andrew Koishigawa make up the squad. Wes Masumura and Stan Yoshimori coach the team. Diane Masumura is the scorekeeper.
The tournament runs through Saturday.
