PO‘IPU — Cars overflowed from the parking lot at the Kiahuna Tennis Club on Saturday at the Koloa Plantation Days’ kick-off Doubles Tournament.
According to Plantation Days Celebration leaders, there were fewer competitors this year, but that meant more food for the participants after the morning of tennis.
Sinclair Bill and Abbie Buck, a mother-daughter team playing in the Women 8.0 division, was clearly a crowd favorite in their opening round match against Rebecca O’Brien and Ann O’Neill.
“(Buck) just started playing recently, but she’s really good,” tournament coordinator Verlene Dawson said. “Young knees, young legs — they make a good combination.”
Helen Young and Michelle Albarado topped the 7.0 Women division with a 6-2 win over Sharon Vea and Terri Morrison.
Joey Sentag and LaVonne Garlie defeated Terri Tobin and Cecilia Williams 6-1 for the 6.0 Women.
Robert Ryccwick and Mike Lichterman topped the Round Robin play for the 8.0 Men division and Dave Kane and Richard Harbrech beat Drew and Louis Vento 8-5 for the 7.0 Men.
The Vento team came back to win the Round Robin for the 6.0 Men competition.
The Doubles Tournament is just one of the sports facets in the weeklong Plantation Days celebration.
Sunday it was miniature golf at the Lawai Beach Resort at 10 a.m. and a 10:30 a.m. shotgun start for the Kiahuna Golf Tournament, followed by a post-tournament celebration at Joe’s on the Green at 3 p.m.
Today and Tuesday, the Visitor Industry hosts a two-day, co-ed softball tournament at Anne Knudsen Park at 6 p.m.
Traditional Hawaiian games take the forefront Wednesday at the Kiahuna Plantation Outrigger at 10 a.m., featuring traditional Hawaiian games geared for children.
Thursday’s sports action moves to the Po‘ipu Bay Golf Course for the annual putting contest from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m.
Na Holo Kai brings the excitement of cross-channel sailing canoe racing to the beaches of the Po‘ipu Beach Park, where the first finishers are expected around 4 p.m. Saturday at the 20th annual Na Holo Kai.
The Koloa Plantation Days celebration wraps up next Sunday with the Plantation Days Rodeo at the CJM Country Stables at noon, featuring double mugging, barrels and team roping competition as well as food and craft booths and a beer garden. There is a $1 admission fee for the event.
