HONOLULU — Republican Gov. Linda Lingle yesterday officially kicked-off her 2006 re-election campaign with the opening of her headquarters in Honolulu. She was joined by supporters, staffers, cabinet members and legislators.
“It has been a great privilege to serve as your governor these past four years,” Lingle said at the event. “There’s not a day that goes by that I don’t feel a great sense of pride in representing the greatest state and the greatest people in America.”
Lingle took the opportunity to laud her administration’s accomplishments after three-and-a-half years in office.
“We promised when we ran for office to rejuvenate this stagnant economy, and we have done that,” she said. “It is because of the strong economy that we have the money to purchase important lands (for conservation), that we had the money in the last two years to give $600 million to our state school system to improve the physical facilities, and that we’ve had the money to clean our state parks.”
Lingle said a strong economy is the foundation that allows Hawai‘i to achieve its goals.
“And while we are proud, we are not satisfied at this point,” she said. “We know there is a lot of work to be done. We’re excited about the opportunity to achieve even greater results. There are many challenges that lie ahead, and many opportunities.”
After her announcement, Kahu Kordell Kekoa blessed the site and welcomed guests into the new headquarters.
