Dennis Onishi and the Piopio Bears are having an experience, camped out at the Kaumakani Neighborhood Center. The Bears were at Wal-Mart late Friday night (Peter Rayno had just come from practice), and will be wrapping up their Kaua‘i tour with the Kaua‘i Hospice’s “Concert in the Sky” Tuesday.
Terry Takata of the Kona Tigers said his girls are staying at the Kaua‘i Sands, and Karen Matsumoto, the KYBA tournament coordinator, said Clayton Tang and the Ikaika Basketball girls were still trickling in Saturday.
Mits Yokotake had his Kilauea girls out, and coach Karl Ubongen took in some of the basketball action before heading out to practice for the soccer players bound for Europe.
Karen said Lorna Santos wasn’t able to come to the games Saturday because of work, but made sure the Bears were squared away in Kaumakani.
Coach Bobby Kamakele was trying to get in the tournament before heading to Kaua‘i High School (Coach Mits and Steven Matsumoto had the same schedules) where Jeff Venzon kicked off the ZZ/Rotary Club of West Kaua‘i Youth Basketball’s 19 and Under league.
With that many games going on, Maynard Shea was refereeing with Dennis Aquino, and at Kaua‘i High School, Jeff had his referee shirt on as well.
Clesson Lee was thrilled they were able to win their first game. Then it was off to get ready for graduation party time.
