Application forms for the 2006 Kaua’i Composers Contest are now available at www.mokihana.kauai.net. The deadline for this year’s competition is 5 p.m., Aug. 4.
The contact phase of the competition will be held at 7 p.m. on Sept. 18 at the Kaua‘i Community College Performing Arts Center.
Composers may submit original compositions with lyrics in Hawaiian Contemporary Hawaiian, Open, Youth and Professional categories.
All composers and musicians are encouraged to participate in the 22st Annual Kaua’i Composers Contest and Concert, to compete for prizes and recognition.
“Encouraging composers to create songs in the Hawaiian language is the goal of this Kaua‘i Mokihana Festival event,” founder Natahan Kalama said in a press release. “The songs out islands’s composers play at this competition will become the classic Hawaiian songes decades from now. One composer is awarded $500 prize to be put toward recording their songs to encourage new music publication.”
A nominal entry fee of $10 per entry is required, and the contest is open to Kauai County residents only.
