Kaua‘i paramedic George Mones was one of 114 EMS personnel to receive the Star of Life award last month.
The prestigious award was presented to EMS personnel in Washington, D.C., as part of the Emergency Medical Services Week, celebrated May 7 through 10.
The Star of Life award is presented as recognition for service above and beyond the call of duty, or on-duty heroism.
American Medical Response-Kaua‘i Island manager Zachary Octavio nominated Mones, who was then selected by the American Ambulance Association and AMR as Hawai‘i’s 2006 EMT Paramedic AMR representative to the 15th annual awards presentation.
Mones has been working in emergency medical services for 27 years.
Kay, Mones’ wife, traveled to the nation’s capital for the ceremony. While there, Mones also met with Hawai‘i’s delegation to the House and Senate, as well as their staffs, to discuss present pre-hospital emergency care quality issues.
The week-long event featured guided tours of Washington and the White House and two award banquets and presentation ceremonies.
U.S. Surgeon General Dr. Ray Camona, a former paramedic, was the keynote speaker for one of the presentation ceremonies.
American Ambulance Association and American Medical Response Ambulance hosted the event.
