Central’s 12 Under team squeaked to the title of the 12 and Under division while Lai‘e soared to the 14 and Under division title Saturday.
Central earned the title with a 20-17 win over Prime Time while Lai‘e captured their title with a 56-21 showing over Papalina.
In a defensive slugfest, Central finished 3 points ahead of Prime Time, a group of youngsters who turned heads at the ZZ/Rotary Club of West Kaua‘i basketball tournament at the Kaua‘i High School gym.
Central’s Kelsey Cadiente was still at the ‘Ukulele Festival with 20 minutes before gametime, and as soon as she finished her gig with Kenny Rapozo, donned her basketball jersey for the ride down Nawiliwili Road, hopefully, in time for the opening tipoff.
Jake Corono paced the Central victory with 8 points followed by Canaan Higa and Kahale Fagarang each netting 3 marks.
Tatsuya Ono had the hot hand for Prime Time with a game-high 9 points. Joshua Ko added 5 in the effort.
Nehoa Akina finished with a game-high 20 points to pace the Lai‘e squad’s win. Samala Afalaua added 16 points.
Kalen Kakutani led the Papalina effort with 5 points followed by Xavier Guirao and Javin Balisacon each netting four points.
The tournament got some help from the county’s anti-drug coordinator Roy Nishida, and Jeff Venzon, ZZ commissioner, said the event was a drug-free, tobacco-free event for the players and spectators.
