For the second year in a row, Kaua‘i High School managed to sweep up the most Kaua‘i Interscholastic Federation titles.
Along with their 10 championships, the Red Raiders picked up one individual state title when Chelsea Smith-Wishard captured the 1,500 meter crown.
“I think there’s a lot more swagger, a lot more pride, but with that comes a lot of expectations,” Kaua‘i head football coach Keli‘i Morgado said. “The whole atmosphere is changing.”
Kaua‘i’s football team won its third straight championship, which gave the red and white school a jolt to start off the 2005-06 campaign.
“When I was interviewed for the job in ‘99, I told Mrs. (Linda) Smith and Mrs. Q (Charlene Quinones) that having Waimea dominate in football all those years made everyone feel Waimea athletics were superior,” Morgado said. “It was a goal of mine to turn around the football program and I was hopeful it would give everyone confidence that the Waimea juggernaut would fall. I was hoping we’d be pioneers. I would say we had a small part in that.”
Kapa‘a, who captured the lone state title (Boys Volleyball) for a KIF school this past season, garnered the second most championships with eight.
Waimea followed close behind with seven titles and Kula rounded out the top four with a championship in boys paddling. Island School finished up with no titles.
Last year, Kaua‘i dominated the KIF scene, taking most of the championships, but this year, both Waimea and Kapa‘a lessened the margin.
