OAKLAND, Calif. — Matson Navigation Company was honored with the bronze award in the large business vessel category in the U.S. Coast Guard’s 2006 Rear Admiral William M. Benkert Marine Environmental Award for Excellence, a Business Wire press release states.
Matson was the only container ship operator recognized in the 2006 award process, created to recognize achievements in marine environmental protection beyond compliance with industrial and regulatory standards. The formal presentation for the biennial awards will take place on June 26 in San Diego.
Matson president and chief executive James Andrasick commended the company’s safety, quality and environmental affairs and vessel operations departments.
Since 1993, Matson installed a zero-discharge policy and is still the only container vessel company with such a program, the release states.
“Matson has also established a Matson Environmental Protection Zone which voluntarily limits discharges from the onboard oil water separators in coastal areas even when it is permissible legally to do so,” SQE vice president Paul Londynsky said in the release.
